HSK Level II Introduction


The HSK Level 2 exam assesses your ability to use everyday Chinese at Level 2 in the “Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages” and Level A2 in the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)”. Candidates who pass the HSK Level 2 exam can communicate simply and directly in Chinese on familiar everyday topics, having reached an advanced level in elementary Chinese.

Test Target


The HSK (Level II) is intended for students who have studied Chinese for two semesters (an academic year), with 2-3 class hours in each week. These students have mastered 300 commonly used words and related grammar patterns. After the new HSK test is launched, the current HSK test won’t be affected in the near future. You can continue to use existing HSK learning materials to prepare for HSK (Level II) test.

The test will last for a total of 55 minutes (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).



Exams Description


The whole exam takes approximately 55 minutes (including 5 minutes to fill in your personal information). The maximum score is 200 points and the pass mark is 120 points.


i. Listening Section

4 types of question, 35 questions in total, 100 points available.


1. Part 1 (10 questions): Does the phrase you hear match the picture?
2. Part 2 (10 questions): Select the picture that matches the dialogue you hear.
3. Part 3 (10 questions): Select the answer that matches the short conversation and question you hear.
4. Part 4: (5 questions): Select the answer that matches the long conversation and question you hear.

Point To Be Noted: (You have approximately 25 minutes to answer the questions, plus 3 minutes to fill in your answer card)


ii. Reading Section

4 types of question, 25 questions in total, 100 points available.


1. Part 1 (5 questions): Does the sentence match the picture?
2. Part 2 (5 questions): Select the word to fill in the blank and complete the sentence.
3. Part 3 (5 questions): Do the two sentences go together?
4. Part 4 (10 questions): Select the two sentences which go together.

Point To Be Noted: (You have approximately 22 minutes to answer the questions)

Results Certificate


For the HSK (Level II), three results will be provided including listening, reading and total. The test taker must score at least 120 points total to be considered passing.
