HSK Level III Introduction


The HSK (Level III) assesses test takers' abilities in the application of everyday Chinese (Mandarin). It is the counterpart of the Level III of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the B1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level III) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. They can manage most communication in Chinese when travelling in China.

Test Target


The HSK (Level III) is intended for students who have studied Chinese for three semesters (one and a half academic years), with 2-3 class hours in each week. These students have mastered 728 commonly used words and related grammar patterns. After the new HSK test is launched, the current HSK test won’t be affected in the near future. You can continue to use existing HSK learning materials to prepare for HSK (Level III) test.

The test will last for a total of 90 minutes (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).



Exams Description


The whole exam takes approximately 90 minutes (including 5 minutes to fill in your personal information). The maximum score is 300 points and the pass mark is 180 points.


i. Listening Section

4 types of question, 40 questions in total, 100 points available.


1. Part 1 (10 questions): Select the picture that matches the dialogue you hear.
2. Part 2 (10 questions): Does what you hear match the sentence in the test paper?
3. Part 3 (10 questions): Select the answer that matches the short conversation and question you hear.
4. Part 4: (10 questions): Select the answer that matches the long conversation and question you hear.

Point To Be Noted: (You have approximately 35 minutes to answer the questions, plus 5 minutes to fill in your answer card)


ii. Reading Section

4 types of question, 30 questions in total, 100 points available.


1. Part 1 (10 questions): Does the sentence match the picture?
2. Part 2 (10 questions): Select the two sentences which go together.
3. Part 3 (10 questions): Select the correct answer to the question based on the text.

Point To Be Noted: (You have approximately 30 minutes to answer the questions)


iii. Writing Section

2 types of question, 10 questions in total, 100 points available.


1. Part 1 (5 questions): Arrange the words to make a sentence.
2. Part 2 (5 questions): Write the correct Chinese character for the Pinyin given.

Point To Be Noted: (You have approximately 15 minutes to answer the questions)

Results Certificate


For the HSK (Level III), four results will be provided including listening, reading, writing and the total. The test taker must score at least 180 points to be considered passing.
